Suzon to Enter Solar Business

Wind power turbine maker Suzlon Energy has announced plans to enter the solar energy sector. Suzlon Energy chairman and Managing Director, Tulsi R. Tanti said this would be in addition to the plans for tapping the wind power potential in India.

GE Ships 10,000th 1.5 MW Turbine

GE Energy announced the shipment of its 10,000th 1.5-megawatt wind turbine, a global wind industry milestone. Over the past ten years, GE’s 1.5-megawatt machines have been installed in 19 countries and have accumulated more than 130 million operating hours, producing more than 78,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity.

The American Wind Energy Association announced the appointment of Denise Bode as its new CEO, effective January 2, 2009.  Bode will succeed Randall S. Swisher, who is retiring after a 19-year career with AWEA.

Taiwan Wind Energy Growth

Taiwan's wind power generation may grow to 3,000 MWs by 2020 due to increased government attention to clean or renewable energy.  Many experts believe Taiwan, with some of the world's best engineers and advanced technologies, could emerge as an important player in the clean energy field.

RWE Expands Polish Wind Business

November 13, 2008

RWE Innogy has gained access to three further wind energy projects in Poland with a total installed capacity of 150 MW.  The sites, each with 50 MW of planned capacity, are located in northern Poland. RWE Innogy has concluded a contract for the projects with a Polish project developer. All three projects are still in the early phase of development.  Based on current planning, official approval of the wind farms is expected from 2011.

Sodium Batteries for Wind Power

When most regional customers are asleep, utilities and power providers often have to dump the power generated by windmills during the wee hours. When utilities dump power, they loses sales.  GeoBattery will try to solve this problem with sodium sulfur batteries.   “They have the lowest cost and highest charge density of any battery,” says the CEO of GeoBattery, Dan Volger.

Arizona Utlity Adds Wind Energy

Arizona Public Service Co. plans to buy 100 MWs of electricity beginning next year from the High Lonesome Wind Ranch being built 55 miles southwest of Albuquerque.  The purchase will give APS 190 MWs of wind capacity. That is enough electricity for about 47,500 houses in APS territory.

Irish Firm Invests in Chilean Wind

Irish company Mainstream Renewable Power has signed a $1 billion euro joint venture with Andes Energy in Chile to develop 400 MW of wind farms in that country.  Mainstream Renewable plans to develop, construct and operate a range of renewable energy plants across Europe, the U.S., South America and Australia and expects to have 200 MW of power built by 2010.

BP Ends China Goldwind Partnership

BP Alternative Energy, a subsidiary of oil giant BP,  has pulled out of a partnership in a wind farm project with a subsidiary of Goldwind Science & Technology Company of China.  Goldwind is China's largest maker of wind turbines.  It said BP decided to suspend its wind power business in Asia.

California Power Line Rejected

California regulatory officials last week effectively killed San Diego Gas & Electric Co.'s plan to build the Sunrise Powerlink through the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and parts of North County.  An administrative law judge for the Public Utilities Commission and a PUC commissioner who were assigned to review the project concluded the route  doesn't make economic or environmental sense.

Minnesota Community Wind Start-up

National Wind announced the formation of Goodhue Wind LLC, a community wind development company in Goodhue County, Minnesota. National Wind, the project's manager, helped capitalize Goodhue Wind alongside local Goodhue County investors. Goodhue Wind intends to develop a 78 megawatt (MW) wind farm, which will supply energy to Midwestern utilities.

£1.2bn Infinis wind power bid

Britain’s Terra Firma Capital Partners Ltd. has started a 1.2 billion-pound ($1.9 billion) bid to build its Infinis unit into of the U.K.'s largest wind-energy producers.  The company plans to buy or build up to 800 mega-watts of onshore wind generating capacity over 10 years.  Guy Hands, the buyout baron behind music publisher EMI, heads Terra Firm.  Infinis presently concentrates on waste-to-energy commerce.

U.S. Wind Power Still Growing

The U.S. wind energy industry installed nearly 1,400 (MW) this quarter, bringing to 4,204 MW the total of wind power projects completed in what is expected to be another record year, the American Wind Energy Association announced today in its 3rd quarter market report.

Pakistan Wind Energy Takes Off

Pakistan will produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity through wind energy within the next few years, according to Irfan Afzal Mirza,  Technical Director of the country’s Alternative Energy Development Board.  He told the Voice of Germany that approval has already been given to over twenty-three projects producing 50 megawatts each.

U.K. Leads World in Offshore Wind

Britain has enough offshore wind farms to provide power to 300,000 households.  The UK has become the world’s leading producer of offshore wind power, toppling Denmark from the top spot. Egyptian Firm Enters Wind Business

El Sewedy Cables has started up a wind energy group to build turbines in Egypt.  The company expects sales of 434.6 million euros ($584 million) by 2011. Sewedy created the Sewedy Wind Energy Group after buying a 30 percent stake in Spanish wind energy equipment manufacturer M.Torres Olvega for 40 million euros. Sewedy retained the option to buy the remainder by March 2011.

Hyundai Buys Into Wind Power

Korea based Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the largest shipbuilder in the world and a major engineering conglomerate,  is set  to enter the global wind energy market.  Hyundai signed a deal to build wind turbines designed by American Superconductor (AMSC), a leading U.S. energy technology company.

Urban Wind Turbine Introduced

AeroCity LLC on Thursday introduced New York business and government leaders to its urban rooftop "Aerotecture" wind turbine, an engineering installation to be followed by the manufacture of demonstration units in Kingston, N.Y., early next year. The company also announced that it has received notice of a $1 million grant from New York State.

Global Wind Power Growing Fast

According to the “Global Wind Power Report 2008 ” released by Research and Markets, the global wind industry is estimated to grow by more than 70 % and reach 160 gigawatts by 2012.  The report states wind is the world’s fastest-growing energy source with an average annual growth rate of 29 % over the last ten years, while power generation costs of wind energy have dropped by 50 %.

B.C. Enters Wind Power Age

British Columbia’s first commercial wind turbine has been erected on a ridge west of Chetwynd for the Dokie Wind Project, and construction is advancing at the Bear Mountain Wind project site outside Dawson Creek. British Columbia is making its debut as a wind energy producer, long after other provinces have begun harnessing wind to help light homes and industry.

Franco-Ethiopia Wind Deal Inked

A major Ethiopian wind power project got off the ground last week.  The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) signed a 210 million Euro contract agreement with Vergnet Group - a French company specializing in the manufacturing and installation of wind turbines - for the construction of a 120Mw capacity Ashegoda Wind Power Project, in Tigray Regional State.

Brazil's Wind Energy Potential

New Jersey's Big Offshore Plans

New Jersey’s Governor called for a tripling of the state's commitment to develop offshore wind energy.  "We will be changing the objective from 1,000 mega watts to 3,000 mega watts by 2020," says Governor Jon Corzine. That would mean about 13 percent of New Jersey's electricity needs would come from the ocean's breeze.

Bird Study Favors Wind Turbines

Wind turbines do not drive birds from surrounding areas, according to British scientists in findings published in the Journal of Applied Ecology. Conservation groups have raised concerns that large birds could get caught in the turbines and that the structures could disturb other species.

New Jersey Picks Offshore Wind Farm

New Jersey utility regulators picked a PSEG-backed wind-power venture Friday for a 350MW offshore pilot project.  The selection gives Bluewater Wind's Delaware startup a new neighbor.  Bluewater, a company that already plans to build more than 60 turbines off Rehoboth Beach, was a runner-up in the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities competition for up to $19 million in state assistance.
