AMSC Windtec Expands to India

American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) announced that its wholly owned AMSC Windtec subsidiary has licensed its proprietary 2 megawatt (MW) doubly-fed induction wind turbine design to Inox Wind Limited, part of India’s Inox Group of Companies (Inox).  The license provides Inox with the right to manufacture and sell the wind turbines globally.

Suzlon Sells 10% Stake in Hansen

The world’s fifth largest wind turbine maker, Suzlon Energy, has agreed to sell about 10% of its equity stake in gearbox designer Hansen Transmissions to Ecofin, a London-based investment firm which specializes in the utility and infrastructure sectors.  Suzlon says the sale is part of its strategy to finance future growth plans.

Suzlon Hikes RePower Stake

Suzlon Energy, the world's fifth leading and India's largest wind turbine manufacturer, will invest about 270 million euros to enlarge its stake in German wind power company REpower Systems AG.  Suzlon will pick up a 22.4 percent stake that Martifer Group of Portugal holds in REpower, which will increase its holding in the German firm to about 91 percent.

Indian State Increases Tariff

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has proposed a sharp increase in the wind power tariff to attract more private investors and tap the state’s wind power potential.  Tamil Nadu offers a low price for wind energy from private investors compared to states like West Bengal.

$16 Billion Rajasthan Wind Bet

The state of Rajasthan in India is set to attract an investment of $16.04 billion in renewable energy sector, with 14 companies proposing projects to tap power from wind and biomass.  Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Chairman Rajeev Swaroop said that the state government has signed memorandum of understanding with 14 power companies to set up power plants in the field of wind biomass energy.

Pakistan Wind Energy Takes Off

Pakistan will produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity through wind energy within the next few years, according to Irfan Afzal Mirza,  Technical Director of the country’s Alternative Energy Development Board.  He told the Voice of Germany that approval has already been given to over twenty-three projects producing 50 megawatts each.

Anil Group's Green Energy Plunge

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s Reliance Power (R-Power) is planning to invest over Rs 60,000 crore in renewable and alternative energy resources such as hydroelectric, wind, solar and fuel cell-based power.  ADAG is currently setting up facilities for 150 MW wind power in Maharashtra and had plans to add 500 MW over the next three years at suitable locations. R-Power has placed equipment orders for 150 MW with wind energy major Suzlon.

India's ONGC Enters Wind Business

India’s state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) launched its first renewable energy venture, a wind farm project having the world’s highest turbine capacity,  on Saturday at Bhuj in Gujarat. The 50 MW turnkey project comprises a 34-unit farm where each wind turbine generator (WTG) unit is capable of generating 1.5 MW, highest in the world. The wind farm has been set up by ONGC at an investment of around Rs. 308 crore.

India's New Wind Power Incentives

India’s government last week initiated a new scheme for wind power generation in a bid to tap the 45,000 mw power potential of the non-conventional resource.  The present wind power production stands at 8,760 mw and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has set a target of 10,500 mw for the new five year plan.  The ministry has initiated new scheme of Generation Based Incentive (GBI) to attract new and large independent power producers to wind sector.

Call for Indian Wind Power Policy

Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers’ Association (IWTMA) has called for a generation-based incentive policy to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into the nascent wind energy sector. Addressing a press conference on Monday, D. V. Giri, Chairman of the association, said any generation-based incentive should have no ceiling on capacity.

India's Lanco Enters Wind Market

India's private Lanco Group said it has planned to set up a wind turbine unit to foray into wind energy. The power and infrastructure major is planning to set up a wind turbine manufacturing unit in southern Puducherry. It is also planning to establish wind farms in India, the United States and Europe. The group is also exploring options in solar and nuclear energy fields and has a presence in the hydropower sector.

India Offers Wind Power Incentives

The Ministry of New and Renewable energy (MNRE) today announced an "incentive" of Rs 0.50 per unit of wind-power fed by the independent power producers into the grid. The generation based incentive (GBI) is aimed at increasing the quantum of grid interactive renewable power.

Suzlon raised $340 million (€219 million) and, from one day to the next, catapulted its founder and his family in the realm of the subcontinent's ultrarich. Tanti himself currently owns 16 percent of Suzlon, while the family owns 66 percent.

Gujarat Fluoro Adds More Wind Power

Refrigerant gases maker Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd expects to add 31.5 megawatts of wind power capacity by the end of the month through a wind farm in Rajasthan.  It currently operates a 23.1 MW wind power farm in the western state of Mahashatra. The company has plans to part-fund a diversification into wind power, aiming for a capacity of 1,000 MW in five years.

Bengal Wind Farm Opens ‘09

Wind energy major Suzlon group will begin generating power from a Rs 500 crore project in West Bengal project, the largest windfarm in the eastern region, from the 2009-10 financial year.  "We are aiming to begin generating power and put in the grid from 2009 from the West Bengal project," says  Suzlon Infrastructure Services Ltd (SISL) General Manager M Rao.  The 50 MW wind farm will require about 700 acre and would be located at Dadanpatra near the sea resort of Digha, some 160 km from Kolkata.

Tamil Nadu Looks to Wind Power

Tamil Nadu is doing well on the wind power front. The state's power board is beefing up its wind mill power infrastructure in order to harvest the full potential and plans to sell surplus power to other states at a handsome profit. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) will be spending around Rs.2 billion of the total Rs.10 billion budget to strengthen the transmission and distribution (R&D) network in the state this year.

The northwest Chinese city of Jiuquan, famous as the nation's satellite launch center, has been busy with a new mission to exploit its rich wind energy resources in the hopes of becoming a global giant in the field of renewable energy.  Altogether 28 new wind farms, with a combined installed capacity of 10.65 million kilowatts, will be built around Jiuquan,a far-flung Gobi desert city by the year 2015.

PTC Profit Up 3-Fold

Power company PTC India Ltd has reported over three-fold increase in profit after tax to Rs 19.22 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2008 compared to Rs 5.8 crore in the corresponding period a year ago. The company reported a 39 per cent increase in profit after tax for whole fiscal at Rs 48.7 crore against Rs 35.09 crore in the previous fiscal, it said in a release. The Board has recommended dividend of 10 per cent.

ADB loans $113 M to CLP India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will extend rupee loans worth $113 million to the Indian unit of CLP Holdings  to partly fund wind power projects, the bank said on Monday. Hong Kong's largest power utility, CLP plans to set up two wind power projects in Gujarat and Karnataka states at a total cost of 9.9 billion rupees ($248 million) and add 183.2 megawatts in capacity in the two states.

CLP Power invests $125M at Jamnagar

Samana Wind Farm, a CLP India initiative, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a reception at the CLP power plant at Bharuch, Gujarat. Energy Minister Shri Saurabh Patel and Minister for Water and Irrigation Shri Nitin Patel also addressed the gathering.  CLP India will invest US$125 million  in the 100.8 MW wind power project in Samana, Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Bangladesh authorities believe up to 1,000 MW of power could be generated from wind energy by installing wind turbines along the coastline. At present 2 MW of power is being generated by wind energy. It also claimed that around 600 MW of power could be produced from bio-mass and around 300 MW from co-generation, using the pulp of crushed sugarcane, for example.

There are 27 locations in the coastal areas of India that have the potential for harnessing wind for power generation. This was revealed subsequent to wind surveys carried out at 71 locations in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, Lakshadweep, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.  Minister of state for new and renewable energy, Vilas Muttemwar, said a target of 10,500 MW of wind power has been planned.

India to promote wind power projects

India said it will promote the setting up of commercial wind power projects by providing financial incentives. Minister for New and Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar said  the government will provide concessional import duty for wind electricity generator subsystems, excise duty exemption and 10-year tax holidays on wind power projects. The government also provides benefits of accelerated depreciation, term loans from the Indian Renewable Energy Department Agency and identification of more potential.

NTPC invests $1.5 b in renewable energy

New Delhi: Biggest coal-based power generator NTPC Ltd plans an investment of Rs 6000 crore ($1.5 billion) to build capacity of 1,000 MW of renewable energy in 10 years, said a senior company official.  This will include 650 MW of wind power.  The company has decided to foray into renewable power generation with a 100 MW wind power project, he added.  In a recent meeting, NTPC's board of directors granted approval for going ahead with the project.

Pakistan approves 5 wind power projects

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has issued licences to five independent power producers (IPPs) for initiating wind power projects in the country.  Official sources told Dawn that eight IPPs had completed feasibility studies on wind power plants for generating 50KW each. Licences for the three IPPs, Zephyr Power Ltd, Beacon Energy Ltd and Zorlu Enerji Ltd, were under process.

India's Suzlon catches wind in China

This substantial facility is in fact the largest manufacturing site run by Indian wind energy major Suzlon, capable of producing wind turbines with an annual capacity of 600 megawatts (MW). The facility, set up with an investment of US$60 million, came on line in April 2007, making it the first investment by an Indian company in China's rapidly expanding energy sector.  India and China are usually associated as competitors in the energy business, particularly for hydrocarbon resources.
