American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC)
announced that its wholly owned AMSC Windtec subsidiary has licensed its
proprietary 2 megawatt (MW) doubly-fed induction wind turbine design to Inox
Wind Limited, part of India’s Inox Group of Companies (Inox). The license
provides Inox with the right to manufacture and sell the wind turbines
globally.

The world’s fifth largest wind turbine maker, Suzlon Energy, has agreed
to sell about 10% of its equity stake in gearbox designer Hansen Transmissions
to Ecofin, a London-based investment firm which specializes in the utility and
infrastructure sectors. Suzlon says the
sale is part of its strategy to finance future growth plans.

Suzlon Energy, the world's fifth leading
and India's largest wind turbine manufacturer, will invest about 270 million
euros to enlarge its stake in German wind power company REpower Systems AG. Suzlon will pick up a 22.4 percent stake that
Martifer Group of Portugal holds in REpower, which will increase its holding in
the German firm to about 91 percent.

The state of Rajasthan in India is set to
attract an investment of $16.04 billion in renewable energy sector, with 14
companies proposing projects to tap power from wind and biomass. Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Chairman Rajeev Swaroop said that the state government
has signed memorandum of understanding with 14 power companies to set up
power plants in the field of wind biomass energy.

Pakistan will produce 1,000 megawatts of
electricity through wind energy within the next few years, according to Irfan
Afzal Mirza, Technical Director of the
country’s Alternative Energy Development Board.
He told the Voice of Germany that approval has already been given to
over twenty-three projects producing 50 megawatts each.

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s
Reliance Power (R-Power) is planning to invest over Rs 60,000 crore in
renewable and alternative energy resources such as hydroelectric, wind, solar
and fuel cell-based power. ADAG is
currently setting up facilities for 150 MW wind power in Maharashtra
and had plans to add 500 MW over the next three years at suitable locations.
R-Power has placed equipment orders for 150 MW with wind energy major Suzlon.

India’s state-run Oil and Natural Gas
Corporation’s (ONGC) launched its first renewable energy venture, a wind farm
project having the world’s highest turbine capacity, on Saturday at Bhuj in Gujarat.
The 50 MW turnkey project comprises a 34-unit farm where each wind turbine
generator (WTG) unit is capable of generating 1.5 MW, highest in the world. The
wind farm has been set up by ONGC at an investment of around Rs. 308 crore.

initiated a new scheme for wind power generation in a bid to tap the 45,000 mw
power potential of the non-conventional resource. The present wind power production stands at
8,760 mw and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has set a target of
10,500 mw for the new five year plan.
The ministry has initiated new scheme of Generation Based Incentive
(GBI) to attract new and large independent power producers to wind sector.

private Lanco Group said it has planned to set up a wind turbine unit to foray
into wind energy. The power and infrastructure major is planning to set up a
wind turbine manufacturing unit in southern Puducherry. It is also planning to

nuclear energy fields and has a presence in the hydropower sector.

Refrigerant gases maker Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd expects to add 31.5
megawatts of wind power capacity by the end of the month through a wind farm in
Rajasthan. It currently operates a 23.1
MW wind power farm in the western state of Mahashatra. The company has plans to
part-fund a diversification into wind power, aiming for a capacity of 1,000 MW
in five years.

Wind energy major Suzlon group will begin generating power from a Rs
500 crore project in West Bengal project, the
largest windfarm in the eastern region, from the 2009-10 financial year. "We are aiming to begin generating power
and put in the grid from 2009 from the West Bengal
project," says Suzlon
Infrastructure Services Ltd (SISL) General Manager M Rao. The 50 MW wind farm will require about 700
acre and would be located at Dadanpatra near the sea resort of Digha, some 160
km from Kolkata.

Tamil Nadu
is doing well on the wind power front. The state's power board is beefing up
its wind mill power infrastructure in order to harvest the full potential and
plans to sell surplus power to other states at a handsome profit. Tamil Nadu

Rs.10 billion budget to strengthen the transmission and distribution (R&D)

Power company PTC India Ltd has
reported over three-fold increase in profit after tax to Rs 19.22 crore for the
quarter ended March 31, 2008 compared to Rs 5.8 crore in the corresponding
period a year ago. The company reported a 39 per cent increase in profit after
tax for whole fiscal at Rs 48.7 crore against Rs 35.09 crore in the previous
fiscal, it said in a release. The Board has recommended dividend of 10 per
cent.

Development Bank (ADB) will extend rupee loans worth $113 million to the Indian
unit of CLP Holdings to partly fund wind
power projects, the bank said on Monday. Hong Kong's largest power utility, CLP
plans to set up two wind power projects in Gujarat
and Karnataka states at a total cost of 9.9 billion rupees ($248 million) and
add 183.2 megawatts in capacity in the two states.

Biggest coal-based power generator NTPC Ltd plans an investment of Rs 6000
crore ($1.5 billion) to build capacity of 1,000 MW of renewable energy in 10
years, said a senior company official. This will include 650 MW of wind power. The company has decided to foray into
renewable power generation with a 100 MW wind power project, he added. In a recent meeting, NTPC's board of
directors granted approval for going ahead with the project.
