Irish-based Offshore wind energy developers today confirmed
that they have projects at an advanced stage of preparation for the development
of over 2,000mw of renewable energy in Irish waters at a capital cost of over
€4 billion. The announcement was made by the five largest offshore wind
companies in Ireland at the launch of NOW Ireland, a new organisation to
promote the development of the offshore wind industry in Ireland. Offshore wind farms are considerably larger in
size than onshore wind farms. If the offshore projects currently under
way were fully developed each would rank in the top twelve power stations in
Ireland.

Swedish utility Vattenfall and forest owner Sveaskog said on
Friday they plan to join forces to build up to 550 wind farms in southern
Sweden. The firms said the agreement
concerned land in Halland, Vastra Gotaland, Kronoberg, Kalmar and Blekinge
counties and could result in plants with a total 1,500 megawatts. That is 40
percent more than any other wind power project in Sweden. The 4 TWh (per year)
in which the investments could result correspond to around 3 percent of
Sweden's total electricity production.

CAR maker Toyota is hoping to strengthen its green
credentials by harnessing wind power at its engine factory in Flintshire. For
the last decade the Japanese company has led the motoring world with its hybrid
Prius car, which uses electric power as well as internal combustion to reduce
fuel consumption and pollution. Now managers at its engine plant on Deeside
Industrial Park in Flintshire hope that some of the energy needed to
manufacture engine components – some of which are exported to Japan – can be
generated on site. This would cushion Toyota against fluctuating energy prices,
as well as potentially reducing electricity bills.

Italy plans to build 500 more wind plants to
become the biggest producer of wind energy, Italian News Agency ANSA
reported. With the help of the 500
additional plants Italy plans to reach a 23,000 gigawatt energy production --
ten times higher than what the country is currently producing. The new wind farms will make Italy the
world's biggest producer of wind energy, leapfrogging Germany which is now
producing 22,622 gigawatts. In 2006 alone, 417 wind plants were built in Italy.

A German company said Tuesday that it has won a major order to supply wind
power generators to Italy. Nordex, based in the Baltic Sea port of Rostock, said
it would supply up to 44 turbines to the Fossa del Lupo wind farm in the
southern province of Catanzaro. The
contract, one of the biggest ever awarded to the company, is worth 104 million
euros (147 million dollars), Nordex spokesman Ralf Peters said. When it comes into operation in 2009, the wind
park is expected to have an annual output 250 gigawatt hours, enough to meet
the electricity demands of more than 80,000 homes.

Engineers last week unveiled the largest wind turbines ever connected to the UK
national grid: two massive generators that tower 300ft over the North Sea 15
miles from the Scottish coast. Now the project's backers say they are preparing
plans to construct 200 of these huge turbines, creating a gigantic wind farm
with the capacity to provide power for an entire city. Both the devices erected
in water 150ft deep in the Beatrice oil field are fitted with three 200ft
blades and can generate 5 megawatts of power, enough to supply a village with
electricity.

MW, are expected to be built in the region's resort cities on the Black Sea
coast by 2011, the administration's press service said. To date, the region produces less than 40% of
the electric power it consumes. Regional authorities said the wind power
project will allow the Krasnodar Territory to bring this figure up to 60%.

Californian power giant, Clipper Windpower. Clipper are preparing to invest in wind power generation in
the North East, and want to build and test a prototype 'mega turbine' at the
New and Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth, Northumberland. The new turbine,
dubbed the 'Million Barrel Equivalent' project (MBE) because its projected
output power is equivalent to importing and burning a million barrels of oil,
will be rated at 7.5 megawatts. A single one could supply electricity to 5,500
homes.
