Irish renewable energy and waste management company NTR Plc
has bought a controlling stake in American wind energy developer Wind Capital
Group (WCG) for an investment of $150 million, it said. "NTR has also
signed an agreement for the supply of 150 megawatts of GE wind turbines on
behalf of WCG for delivery in 2010 to accelerate the build out of WCG's
portfolio of development projects," NTR said.

Plans for Britain's
biggest land-based wind farm were turned down by the Scottish government
yesterday, in a landmark decision with wide implications for the future
development of renewable energy in the UK. The 181-turbine development on the Hebridean island of Lewis was vetoed by Scottish ministers
because it was at odds with tough protection for wildlife sites afforded by
European law.

Britannia, along with ruling the waves, is about to make a contribution to
the UK's
renewable energy program. The Crown Estate, which owns almost all of the UK's
territorial seabed within 12 miles of the coast, has agreed to buy the
prototype of the world's largest offshore wind turbine - known as the Britannia
project - from the Aim-listed company Clipper Windpower.

Spain's ambitious plans to expand wind power as
part of its renewable energy drive will bring environmental and economic
benefits but faces technical problems, an industry expert said. Spain's wind
parks currently have an installed capacity of some 15,000 megawatts and the
government wants to see 20,000 MW in place by 2010 and 30,000 MW by 2030.

The wind energy industry needs to invest up to €6bn over the
next decade for the Government to reach its target of generating a third of the
country’s power from renewable sources, according to head of the wind energy
lobby group. Michael Walsh of Irish Wind Energy Association said: “With over
1,000 megawatts of wind power already connected on the island of Ireland,
the wind energy has already invested over €1bn in generation capacity.”

Energy giant E.ON
has unveiled plans to build one of the biggest wind farms in the UK saying it
wanted a swift resolution to an objection from the Ministry of Defence. The
company submitted an application to build the wind farm eight kilometres off
the East Yorkshire coast and said that the
so-called Humber Gateway site would generate enough electricity to power almost
200,000 homes.

Funding for people who want to fit windmills, solar panels
or heat pumps to their homes is to be tripled.
Finance Secretary John Swinney today announced the Scottish Government
will make available £13.5 million a year for the next three years to help
householders, small businesses and local communities generate their own clean
energy. It means more householders will be able to access grants of up to £4000 and
community groups up to £100,000 for fitting alternative energy sources.

The world's computing power should be moved from desktop
computers and company servers to remote outposts where renewable energy such as
wind and solar power is abundant, says a Cambridge University
computer expert. With carbon emissions from computing set to rise rapidly in
the coming decades, Prof Andy Hooper said his idea could significantly reduce
the contribution made by computers to climate change. "There's something
very special about computing power which is very different from heating your
house."

Portugal,
one of the European Union's least conspicuous countries, is in the vanguard of
the continent's rush to harness renewable energy. Despite its frail economy, it
is one of eight EU countries whose push into clean technology has enabled a
double-digit share of electricity consumption from green sources. The EU wants
clean power sources to furnish 20 percent of the bloc's energy by 2020, up from
8.5 percent in 2005 — and the Amareleja project is at the forefront of that
mission.

It's easier here than in most industrialized nations to
green the electrical grid. Peak demand for electricity in the Republic of Ireland
comes to about 5,000 MWs, said Graham Brennan, program manager for
renewable-energy research at Sustainable Energy Ireland, the government's
green-technology arm. The peak occurred last December, at 4,907 MWs. Studies show that onshore and offshore wind
turbines located in the republic could deliver approximately 5,000 MWs of power
over both parts of the island.

Norway
should harness the wind along its coastline by investing in offshore projects
and could become a leading exporter of renewable energy to Europe, Petroleum
and Energy Minister Aaslaug Haga said at an energy conference in Oslo. Norway gets
more than 99 per cent of its electricity from hydropower dams dotting the
country's fjords and waterfalls. Oil production fell to a 13-year low in 2007
as North Sea fields dried up. The Ministry of
Petroleum and Energy has identified wind power as one way to make up the
shortfall.

The British government says it is committed to renewable
energy and has signed up to the latest EU generation target for 2020 - but
countries across the world are doing better. It's a story repeated throughout
the renewable and clean energy sector in Britain. Despite all the talk from
the government about being a world leader on climate change - not to mention
all the wind and waves at the UK's
disposal - its track record on delivering on these promises is not so
impressive.

30-fold jump in wind power generating capacity, or an extra 3,000 megawatts by
2020, an increase that would have the country generate a tenth of its
electricity from wind. Responding to earlier comments by Mauri Pekkarinen

A £100m pot set aside to boost Scotland's renewables industry is
languishing in Government coffers because of a dispute over funding. Last year,
SNP ministers vowed to ensure the cash was handed over to the Scottish
Government to help increase wind and wave power. But the money is still being
held by energy regulator Ofgem, denying the renewable industry massive
investment. Labour MPs last night hit
out at SNP ministers, claiming they had reneged on their vow to secure the
funding.

The demand for action from the government came as the company unveiled an operating profit of £2.18 billion for last year. British Gas, owned by Centrica, recorded profits of £571 million, up from £95m in 2006, contributing to a 40 per cent surge in group-wide profits.

Hitting the European Union's target for renewable energy will require investment in wind power of about £80bn, implying a steep rise in capital spending from today's levels, according to industry estimates. Centrica, the owner of British Gas, will highlight the need for this huge investment programme when it reports today. Industry executives are raising concerns about the scale of the challenge. Ramping up investment in wind so steeply will worsen problems such as shortages of turbines, which are already hitting the industry.

battle" against climate change, as its coal powered the industrial
revolution. A deadline of 13 May for
responses from the public has been set.
