Turkmen Wind Power

August 20, 2008

Turkmenistan is estimated to possess the world's fifth-largest natural gas reserves and substantial oil resources.  Despite the fact that the country’s future prosperity is apparently assured by such bounty, the country is taking steps toward exploring the potential of alternative energy sources. Specialists of the Giun  Scientific Association have constructed a prototype wind turbine capable of generating five kilowatts.

Antarctica Base Resorts to Wind Power

April 4, 2008

Antarctica's  Scott Base pans to erect wind turbines to cut back on diesel-powered generators and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The wind turbines could save 380,000 litres of fuel a year at Scott Base and more than one million litres a year at nearby United States base McMurdo Station. They could power up to half the heat and light needs for the 35 workers at Scott Base, and some of the energy needs for the 1200 at McMurdo.

Myths and Facts of Wind Energy

Energy Bangla - Dhaka,Bangladesh

March 31, 2008

Every kilowatt hour of energy generated by the wind in Australia, is a kilowatt hour NOT generated by other sources. The addition of wind generation up to about 20% of the total generation has no need for additional back-up as the National Electricity Market already has backup "spinning reserve" to meet sudden increases in demand. This reserve is generally provided by hydro and gas, which can be brought on-line much quicker than coal.

Wind energy round the clock
ScienceAlert – Australia

March 20, 2008

While wind power is one of the most mature renewable energy sources around, it’s also still one of the most variable, in terms of a 24/7 supply.  An Australian-designed ‘super battery’ may offer a solution. The Smart Storage battery unit uses technology behind CSIRO’s patented UltraBattery, designed in 2003 for use in hybrid electric cars.   The UltraBattery contains both a lead acid battery cell and a capacitor. While the battery cell allows the unit to store a large amount of energy, the capacitor component allows the unit to charge quickly, many times over, without affecting performance.

Japan wind power lags
Electric Light & Power- Tulsa

February 18, 2008

Global wind power capacity that was newly installed in 2007 totaled 20,000 megawatts, an amount equivalent to capacity generated by 15 large-scale nuclear power plants, but Japan lags behind in the field. The year's newly installed wind power in Japan, meanwhile, came to 139 MWs, only one-38th of the U.S. figure, a result underlining Japan's slow progress in wind power development. Japan stood at 14th in the ranking in terms of the yearly growth, says the Brussels-based Global Wind Energy Council.

US Resists Climate Change Progress
Bloomberg Business News

December 12, 2007

The U.S. is resisting calls from the European Union and developing nations to commit to cutting greenhouse-gas emissions blamed for global warming, threatening progress on a new accord to fight climate change.  130 nations are meeting in Indonesia this week to decide to write a successor to the Kyoto climate-change treaty, which expires in 2012. The Bush administration says talks should begin without a set emission target. Without U.S. support, the negotiations may not be completed in time to replace the Kyoto treaty.  The lack of an emission-cut target threatens investment in power and carbon-trading markets, UN officials say.

AGL Energy to build wind power project

Melbourne Herald Sun - Australia

November 6, 2007

Australia's biggest electricity and gas retailer AGL Energy plans to build a $166 million wind power project in South Australia, taking advantage of measures to promote  generation of renewable energy.  The 71-megawatt project, to be AGL's second in the Hallett region of SA, is due to start operating in November 2009.  It will immediately add to earnings once it starts up, AGL said.  Suzlon Energy won the contract to construct the Hallett Hill project, which will provide enough power to fuel 40,000 homes, AGL said. Suzlon is also building AGL's first project at Hallett, the Brown Hill farm.

Loyalty to coal hampers Aussie wind

Sydney Morning Herald - New South Wales, Australia

November 5, 2007

In April last year the future of wind energy in Australia was in doubt after the Coalition Government blocked a Victorian wind farm.  The Labor Party made much mileage from the drama but it refused to say how much renewable energy it would aim for if it won government. Meanwhile, both parties continued to support the country's dirtiest industry, assigning millions of dollars to an elusive technology they said would clean the carbon out of coal. The renewable energy industry watched in despair.

Petratherm welcomes Labor policy

Melbourne Herald Sun - Australia

October 31, 2007

A Petratherm hot rocks site could become viable as early as late 2009 under the Opposition's requirement that electricity retailers buy 20 per cent of power from renewable resources by 2020.  And Victoria's biggest wind farm operator, Pacific Hydro, would be able to increase its energy output sixfold if the policy comes into play in the event of a Labor Party election victory.  Pacific Hydro, which has 100 megawatts of installed generation, said the incentive would provide certainty for a further 600 megawatts of wind energy projects worth $1.5 billion over five years.

Antarctic windfarm assessed

Stuff.co.nz - Wellington, New Zealand

October 23, 2007

A New Zealand team investigating a windfarm to power Scott Base in Antarctica has found the world's breeziest continent is an easier place to build a turbine than Wellington.  A team from Meridian Energy is due to fly south today to conduct feasibility tests around Scott Base, which three years ago was hit by a storm with wind gusts that exceeded 200km/h, and which destroyed the base's wind vane.  Antarctica New Zealand's Antarctic said if the windfarm goes ahead, it would also help power the neighbouring United States base, McMurdo Station.

Contact Energy said Tuesday that it could spend as much as 2 billion New Zealand dollars, or $1.5 billion, building the largest wind farm in New Zealand to help reduce its reliance on gas-fired power plants. The Hauauru Ma Raki site, on the North Island of New Zealand, has the potential for 218 turbines with a total capacity of 650 megawatts, Contact said in a statement to the New Zealand stock exchange. At that scale, the wind farm could produce enough electricity to power 250,000 homes.

NSW wind commitment questioned
ABC Online – Australia

October 17, 2007

Doubts have surfaced about the New South Wales Government's commitment to fully power the proposed desalination plant at Kurnell, in Sydney's south, with wind energy. The State Government is calling for proposals from wind farms to meet the entire energy needs of the Kurnell plant.  More than 20 producers have already been briefed on the project.  Water Resources Minister Nathan Rees estimates less than a fifth of the national output of wind farms would be needed for the job, but getting it to Sydney could require additional resources.

Aussies to increase wind electricity

The Australian - Sydney, Australia

October 2, 2007

Wind energy therefore currently needs subsidies or a significant price on greenhouse emissions to compete in the current market. It generates about 1 % of total supply courtesy of the existing mandatory renewable energy targets (MRET) in place since 2001.  But all that is about to change following last week's pre-election upgrade of the scheme by John Howard. The Government's new clean energy target of about 15 % of low-emissions electricity by 2020 effectively underwrites the existing array of state renewable targets and foreshadows an even bigger national scheme from Labor in the coming days.
