Gulf States Renewable Energy Future

August 6, 2008

Although wind energy is the most developed and efficient energy source among the new renewables, the focus in the Gulf is more on solar energy. Conditions for its production are very favorable in the region, while the endowment of wind resources is not so impressive in international comparison.  There are notable exceptions though.  Wind power has considerable prospects on the Red Sea shoreline and the East coast of the Peninsula.

Oman eyes green energy

June 23, 2008

Oman has issued a landmark study which effectively charts a road map for the development of renewable energy resources in the Sultanate. "We believe this is the first systemic study of Oman's renewable energy potential," said John Cunneen, Executive Director of the Authority for Electricity Regulation.  He added, "in addition to highlighting the potential use of renewable for electricity generation, chiefly solar and wind, the study will also assist the process of developing renewable energy policies for Oman."

Wind Power for Lebanon

June 10, 2008

Lebanon is in a position to take meaningful action that will go a long way in reducing out ecological footprint in general and our carbon footprint in particular. Lebanon is blessed in being located in a geographic region that provides around 300 days a year of sunshine and a relatively long coast line considering the size of the country. The most efficient two clean energy alternatives are wind and solar.

First Wind Power Skyscraper

April 21, 2008

Bahrain's World Trade Center is a giant skyscraper, with two twin towers, and its partially wind-powered, comlete with an architectural design to maximize wind flow. The three massive turbines, measuring 29 meter across, are supported by bridges spanning between the two towers. Through its positioning and the unique aerodynamic design of the towers, the prevailing on-shore Gulf breeze is funneled into the path of the turbines, helping to create power generation efficiency.

Scottish Study on benefits of green power
BBC News

March 18, 2008

A study into how the Western Isles can benefit economically from wind and wave power scheme while protecting the environment has been announced..  It has been welcomed by Lewis Wind Power, which has proposed 181 turbines for Barvas Moor on Lewis. The Scottish Government has still to make a decision on whether to give the scheme the go-ahead. If approved, its supporters said it would create jobs and make a contribution to green energy targets.

Middle East Entry in Wind Power
Equilibri.net - Egypt

March 5, 2008

As almost every Middle East and south-bank Mediterranean country, Egypt is a producer and exporter of power sources such as petroleum and natural gas. However, unlike other situations, the country has enacted a diversification process of its power sources in order to have the strongest energy reliability in the future and increase its economy, making it more stable. After the ratification of the environmental agreements of Kyoto and Bali, the path toward the exploitation of the renewable sources surely represents a greater effort in terms of the sustainable development and the reduction of the gas discharge if compared with the surrounding area.

Ireland announces wind feed-in tariff
Power Engineering Magazine - Tulsa, OK, USA

February 12, 2008

Ireland has announced a government-backed guaranteed price for offshore wind power in a bid to boost the development of renewable energy.  Under the government's feed-in tariff scheme, offshore wind power that is produced will get a support price of €140 ($202.9) per MW-hour. The move follows a similar initiative for onshore wind farm generation. Ireland's energy minister Eamon Ryan said the support price was "in line with what other countries are offering."

Wind Power moving off farms?
Medill Reports - Chicago,IL,USA

January 23, 2008

Bill Becker of a Chicago firm called Aerotecture is among those banking on a change in thinking. Becker said wind power does not have to mean a wind farm. He says wind power can be generated in cities. “Just because they can’t build their 500-foot towers downtown … they say there’s no wind there,” said Becker, whose past projects include small turbines atop a north suburban law office, a Near North housing development and even a private home in Chicago’s trendy Bucktown neighborhood.

Bahrain Wind Energy for Urban Future
Worldwatch Institute

November 13, 2007

Today, 75 years later, Bahrain’s economy remains highly dependent on oil and natural gas. But the country is also helping to pioneer the way toward a renewable energy future. It recently installed its first utility-scale wind turbines on a new commercial development—the Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC)—in the financial district of Manama, the nation’s capital.  When the BWTC is completed, likely in early 2008, the building’s three 29-meter diameter wind turbines will produce enough power to meet 11 to 15 percent of the needs of the two 50-story office towers—or an estimated 1,100 to 1,300 MW-hours of clean electricity each year.

Oil rich Gulf seeks alternative energy

Al-Bawaba - Amman, Jordan

October 29, 2007

Dubai is taking a lead in wind power research. A study is being carried out for Dubai for a $1 billion wind farm project. The research is on wind as alternative source for power in the region and is on a grand scale, aiming to supply up to 10% of Dubai city's power. The scope of work involves the meteorological study, design, supply, installation and operation of 70 metre high wind turbines. The UAE - with growing demand for power which it is unable to meet from gas alone, along with pressures to reduce CO2 emissions - is leading the way in looking seriously at alternative energy sources.

Wind farms don’t harm house prices
The Scotsman – Scotland

Feb. 19, 2007

A new study suggests wind farms do not have a negative impact on the price of property in nearby areas.  The study discovered that prices in Dunbar have risen by more than double the rate across the whole of East Lothian, despite it only being six miles from the massive Crystal Rig wind farm. The Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre found that in June 2002 average prices in Dunbar were £85,144, nearly £30,000 below the East Lothian average.
