Suzlon's 224 MW Deal in Spain

Suzlon Energy Limited (SEL), the world’s fifth leading and India’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, secured a new framework agreement with EUFER (joint-venture between ENEL Green Energy and Spanish Utility UNION FENOSA for renewable energy business in Spain and Portugal) for supply and installation of Suzlon 2.1 MW wind turbines for wind farms totalizing 224.5 MW. These machines are proposed to be installed up to FY 2010-11.

RePower's Big UK Offshore Deal

REpower Systems and Vattenfall have signed a 150 Mw contract for an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea. The deal is the largest offshore agreement to date in the U.K. for REpower. 30 turbines are intended for the Ormonde wind farm, on which construction is to begin at the start of 2011 around 35 kilometers away from the town of Barrow-in-Furness on the northwest coast of England.

U.K. Wind Targets Questioned

A study by the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) has found that the UK is likely to fall far short in meeting 2010 targets for renewable energy. BWEA said that on average across England only 50 percent of the renewable electricity generation would be met, with some regions such as the South West failing to reach even a third.

China's Huge Wind Energy Initiative

China's wind power sector has witnessed 100 percent annual growth in the past three years. The country's wind power installed capacity is expected to exceed 30 GW by the end of 2010, up from 12 GW last year.  China plans to build seven wind power bases with a minimum capacity of 10 GW each by 2020, in an initiative to greatly increase the use of the clean energy.

Irish Co-op Wind Farm Proposed

A wind energy development co-operative in County Clare today announced plans to construct one of Ireland’s largest wind farms.  The company believes the proposed EUR200 million project would be capable of generating enough electricity to power every home and business in County Clare, as well as meeting the Limerick Clare Energy Agency’s 2010 targets for emissions reductions and renewable energy production.

AMSC Windtec Expands to India

American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) announced that its wholly owned AMSC Windtec subsidiary has licensed its proprietary 2 megawatt (MW) doubly-fed induction wind turbine design to Inox Wind Limited, part of India’s Inox Group of Companies (Inox).  The license provides Inox with the right to manufacture and sell the wind turbines globally.

Siemans Builds China Plant

The German energy giant Siemens is building its first wind turbine manufacturing plant in China.  The wind turbines produced in Shanghai will be for the Chinese market and for export. Siemens is investing more than 60 million euros in setting up this new location.

Chna's Trillions for Renewables

China is planning to spend $4.4 trillion on expanding renewable energy use, state media said, as it seeks to rely more on cleaner ways to power its growth.  The investment will be partly focused on wind power.  China's government says it will have 100 gigawatts of wind-power capacity by 2020 - enough to power more than 60 million homes.

Biggest Wind Farm Goes Ahead

Permission has been granted to create the world's largest offshore wind farm 12 miles off the Kent coast in the United Kingdom.  The project is eventually expected to have 1 gigawatt of energy generation capacity, enough to supply power for around 750,000 homes—or a quarter of Greater London homes.

Oman Boosts Wind, Solar Power

A 2008 study by Oman found the nation's solar energy potential is sufficient to meet all of our domestic electricity requirements and provide electricity for export.  The study also found wind energy potential along the southern coast and in the northern mountains. It said there was some potential for biogas, geothermal and wave energy but recommended the country focus on wind and solar.

China's first 10 MW Wind Project

The Jiuquan wind power project in Gansu province, which mainly comprises 18 wind power stations each with a capacity of 200,000 kw and two wind power stations each with a capacity of 100,000 kw, will soon start construction. UK Introduces Carbon Budget

Chancellor Alistair Darling presented the "world's first Carbon Budget" as part of his statement to the House of Commons. Darling said the Labour government would cut the UK's emissions by 34% before 2020. Offshore wind projects are set to gain £525 million through a rise in the Renewables Obligation banding for the next two years.

New Brit Wind Consortium Formed

Scottish and Southern Energy plc, a UK-based energy company, announced that the company's renewable energy development division Airtricity has teamed up with Fluor Limited to form a new energy consortium called the Seagreen Wind Energy Limited.   Seagreen Wind Energy Limited will bid for the exclusive rights to develop wind farms under The Crown Estate's Round 3 Offshore Wind Farm Development Program.

Aussie Utility Orders Suzlon Turbines

Australia's biggest electricity and gas retailer, AGL Energy, has agreed to buy 63 turbines from India's Suzlon Energy for a $341 million wind-power project in South Australia.  In February, both the firms had entered into an agreement for supplying 54 units of Suzlon's wind turbine generators.

Billion Dollar Chilean Investment

Ireland-based renewable energy developer Mainstream Renewable Power said on Wednesday it would invest $1 billion in Chile through 2014, focusing on wind power.  The firm said it would build a wind farm near the coast in central Chile that will comprise 16 windmills, which would enter operation next year and produce enough electricity to supply 19,000 homes.

REpower Erects Jumbo Turbines

REpower Systems AG has just completed erection of the first wind farm consisting exclusively of REpower 6M turbines. The three turbines, installed in the Westre civic wind farm close to the German-Danish border, each have six megawatt rated power and a rotor diameter of 126 metres, making them some of the biggest wind turbines in the world.

RSPB Calls for More Wind Farms

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) fears that Britain may not meet its targets on renewable energy unless it builds more wind turbine farms across the country.  The RSPB denied its call for more wind power represented a U-turn and said that it was stressing the need to find sites for turbines where wildlife would be relatively unaffected.

General Electric Co (GE) plans to double wind turbine deliveries to Chinese customers over the next two years, the Shanghai Daily reported.  Gamesa Corporacion Tecnologica has received several turbine orders from China’s renewables development company Longyuan Electric Power Group Corporation.

Vattenfall Buys Nuon for €8.5bn

Swedish state-owned energy giant Vattenfall, the Nordic region’s largest utility, has offered to take over Dutch energy provider Nuon. Both companies announced in a joint statement that Vattenfall is buying a minority share of 49 percent within the next few months.

World Bank Backs Chile Wind Farm

The World Bank Group is investing $61.5 million for construction of a wind farm in Chile.   The International Finance Group (IFC) of the World Bank is supporting the government of Chile’s objectives of rapidly increasing and diversifying its energy supply. The Totoral Wind Farm, situated 300 kilometres north of Santiago, will consist of 23 two-megawatt wind turbines.

Danes Consider South Africa Wind

A number of Danish companies are considering investments in South African wind power but have warned that the industry needs the certainty of a renewable energy policy and a feed-in tariff. The companies were speaking at a wind energy conference on Friday after Denmark and South Africa signed an energy co-operation agreement, which will transfer Danish help to South Africa for wind mapping and capacity building.

Suzlon Sells 10% Stake in Hansen

The world’s fifth largest wind turbine maker, Suzlon Energy, has agreed to sell about 10% of its equity stake in gearbox designer Hansen Transmissions to Ecofin, a London-based investment firm which specializes in the utility and infrastructure sectors.  Suzlon says the sale is part of its strategy to finance future growth plans.

The Russian news agency Interfax reported that the Astrakhan region has signed a protocol of intent with Fersa Cherkessk LLC to install wind turbines in the region.  Astrakhan is situated in the Volga Delta.  Fersa Cherkessk is a venture of the Spanish energy firm Fersa Energias Renovables, which engages in electricity generation from alternative energy sources.

Germany utility RWE plans to build its first offshore wind farm in the North Sea.  RWE  has acquired the project company Enova Energieanlagen, which is part of the Enova Group. This acquisition includes the rights to the offshore wind project North Sea Windpower 3. Following the acquisition, the wind farm will be renamed Innogy Nordsee 1.

Suzlon Energy, the world's fifth leading and India's largest wind turbine manufacturer, will invest about 270 million euros to enlarge its stake in German wind power company REpower Systems AG.  Suzlon will pick up a 22.4 percent stake that Martifer Group of Portugal holds in REpower, which will increase its holding in the German firm to about 91 percent.

Turkish companies have decided to produce wind turbines.   Model Enerji, formed during the first half of 2008, is the first company founded in Turkey to manufacture megawatt-class wind turbines. Istanbul-based Model Enerji plans to manufacture the 1.65-megawatt turbines, which utilize a doubly fed induction generator drive train, at a factory to be established in Ankara’s industrial zone.

Gamesa's $150 Million Venezuela Deal

The Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa has agreed to supply 100 megawatts of installed wind capacity to Venezuelan state oil firm PDVSA for nearly $150 million.  Work will begin in 2009 and involve the supply, installation and two years of maintenance for the 76 wind turbines which make up Venezuela's first wind farm, located in the state of Falcon.

Aussie State Considers Feed-In Tariff

Shell Abandons UK Wind Project

Royal Dutch Shell and its partners have withdrawn from a major UK wind energy project.  The consortium of Shell, Scottish Power and Denmark's Dong Energy have abandoned the Cirrus Array project off the Northwest coast after denying a month ago it had exited the project. The consortium cancelled the 800 million pound project after five years and millions of pounds of investment.

$16 Billion Rajasthan Wind Bet

The state of Rajasthan in India is set to attract an investment of $16.04 billion in renewable energy sector, with 14 companies proposing projects to tap power from wind and biomass.  Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Chairman Rajeev Swaroop said that the state government has signed memorandum of understanding with 14 power companies to set up power plants in the field of wind biomass energy.

UK Decarbonization by 2030

Great Britain’s Committee on Climate Change has published its first report describing  how to cut the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80% before 2050.  Created by the Climate Change Act, the committee said the target would require "almost full decarbonization" of the power industry by 2030.  It suggests wind power will play a major role in decarbonization.

Union Fenosa Doubling Aussie Wind

British Columbia-based Finavera Renewables struck a $800 million funding deal with Fairfield, Conn.-based General Electric for Finavera wind farms in Canada.  The deal gives GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of GE, the exclusive right to fund or arrange equity and debt financing.

Welsh Wind Energy Questioned

If all of Wales was covered with wind turbines, the nation would generate only a sixth of the Great Britain’s energy needs, according to a physicist at Cambridge University.  This criticism comes as the Environment Agency is about to announce plans to build up to 80 turbines on its own land and the speculation that a new nuclear power station will be built in Wales intensifies.
