Centrica has called for a streamlining of the planning system and a more supportive framework for offshore wind farms, if the UK is to meet ambitious renewable energy targets. The demand for action from the government came as the company unveiled an operating profit of £2.18 billion for last year. British Gas, owned by Centrica, recorded profits of £571 million, up from £95m in 2006, contributing to a 40 per cent surge in group-wide profits.
